You might not expect a successful Formula 1 and endurance driver to be a tall man with glasses and a university background. Yet appearances can be deceiving. Andrea de Adamich was exactly that — an intelligent and determined racing driver who excelled particularly in difficult conditions such as rain or challenging road circuits like the Targa Florio.
Born during World War II in Croatia, de Adamich grew up in Italy after his family fled Tito’s communist regime. In 1962, his mother bought him a Triumph TR3 to drive to university. Instead of focusing on tennis or skiing, Andrea quickly developed a passion for motorsport, starting with local hill climbs.
De Adamich began his racing career in Formula Junior and Formula 3, but he gained major recognition in the European Touring Car Championship, driving the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA.
His performances caught the attention of Enzo Ferrari, who offered him a Formula 1 drive in 1968. During qualifying for the South African Grand Prix, de Adamich even outpaced established teammates Jacky Ickx and Chris Amon.
However, his momentum was halted shortly after. At the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, he suffered a severe crash. His car hit the wall and caught fire, leaving him with two fractured cervical vertebrae. He was sidelined for months, and his Italian racing licence was revoked.

After recovering, de Adamich obtained a new racing licence in Switzerland. Ferrari did not renew his contract, but Alfa Romeo welcomed him into their program.
In 1969 and 1970, he competed in endurance racing with the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33, run by Autodelta. The team’s technical director, Carlo Chiti, saw potential in adapting the car’s V8 engine for Formula 1.
Chiti modified the Tipo 33 engine into a 3-litre V8, aiming to comply with Formula 1 regulations introduced in 1966. While the engine produced competitive power, it had key weaknesses:
Lower rev limit (around 9,600 rpm compared to ~10,800 rpm for the Cosworth DFV) Higher fuel consumption Limited development budget from Alfa Romeo
To bring the project into F1, Chiti partnered with Bruce McLaren.
McLaren adapted the M7D chassis to accommodate the Alfa engine, including a larger fuel tank and structural modifications. The result was the unique McLaren M7D-Alfa.
1970 Season Highlights:
Spanish GP (Jarama): Car proved too heavy; de Adamich narrowly missed qualification
Monaco GP: Another non-qualification
Dutch GP (Zandvoort): New M14D-Alfa introduced, but still too heavy (+20 kg vs Cosworth version)
The combination struggled with performance and reliability, and results were poor overall. Multiple retirements, repeated non-qualifications and Lack of pace.
After Bruce McLaren’s fatal accident in 1970, development slowed.
McLaren ultimately abandoned the Alfa Romeo engine.



During the off-season, Chiti found a new partner: March Engineering, supported by STP boss Andy Granatelli.
The March 711-Alfa Romeo featured:
Aerodynamic bodywork designed by Frank Costin Side-mounted radiators integrated into the chassis.
A distinctive high-mounted front wing (“tea tray”)
Despite innovative design, the Alfa V8 continued to suffer from vibrations, unreliable oil circulation and a large number of mechanical failures.

The March-Alfa effort rotated between Andrea de Adamich and Nanni Galli.

Monaco: Failure to qualify (Galli)
Netherlands (rain): Crash involving François Cevert (Galli)
France (Paul Ricard): Double retirement due to engine failure. At Paul Ricard, there were two March -Alfa in the race. Max Mosley, who got the Alfa engines for free, forced Peterson to drive the 711/6 and De Adamich was in his regular 711/1 Alfa. Engine failure lap 20 for Peterson and in lap 37 for Andrea.

Germany & Austria: Lower midfield finishes(Galli)
Italy: Retirement
Watkins Glen: P11 finish


Despite continuous effort, Autodelta could not solve the engine’s core issues. Alfa Romeo’s management decided to shift focus toward a V12 engine instead, effectively ending the V8 project. That was announced at Monza.
Andrea de Adamich continued to race until the end of the season, showing determination despite limited competitiveness.
Conclusion: A Bold but Unsuccessful Experiment
The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33-based V8 engine started 25 Formula 1 races across McLaren and March chassis. However, it failed to achieve significant results due to:
